Follow-Up to Hank Ayala and website updates!
Hank Ayala and I had a great time last Saturday evening with our interview on KVMR-FM. I played mostly music from Texas and south Louisiana, and definitly brought back a few memories for Hank. And, it seems I played a few songs he had not heard before. Hank is a great guy, and is pleased he could make the recording, and quite frankly, it's really good. Betty Jo is the plug side, and the flip is called Handsome. It's an odd one, but Hank carries it through. I hope to get a page up with the record in the near future.
This Saturday I have a 12 minute recorded interview with Vince Castro to play on my radio show. You can bet I will play Bong Bong, Too Proud To Cry, and a couple others. He also has recorded a few pop standards as of late, and I plan to get one or two of those a spin.
Massive website updates. All the work, but it is really hard for someone to see. If I listed all the pages that were modified, this blog edition might look like a link farm. Check out the Turbans demo, 6 new first and second labels, a new one hour audio file, and the Barney Tall I mentioned in an earlier post on the Domino label page. There is lot's more, but you can search around if you have the time. There are a few more to come, but 90 per cent of what I had piled up is done....until tomorrow!
How about a little advanced notice? Every year I keep thinking I will make a Halloween record page, and I just never get there. One of the most interesting radio shows I do is the Halloween show, this year on October 28th. I play some of the strangest records in my collection for a full two hours. You won't hear them anywhere else. I'm sure I will remind you later in October. Since the radio show is streamed live, anyone can hear it with an internet connection.
Geez, I guess I could do that with Christmas records too. I better not get started with that! So many records to collect and so little time. Even better is trying to find those records you didn't think were ever made, and they just show up. Doesn't happen often, but what a surprise when it does.

The Matadors and Vince Castro
It's the same old story with me. Just the time I think another web page is imminent, something even more interesting comes up. On today's radio show, I will be interviewing Hank Ayala who fronted a group called the Matadors in the early 1960's. He was from southern Texas, and had just one record. He will be a live in-studio guest, and it should be a blast. Hope you can listen starting a 4PM Pacific. If not, I know I will get a web page up for him...I promise!
Vince Castro is alive and well, living in the Bronx. I talked with him a couple weeks ago, and will present a short interview on my September 9th radio show, along with his music. He has sung a few songs as of late, and I will try and feature at least one of them. He is a very nice guy, and sounds like he is doing OK.
Talked with Jimmy Charles today. He is doing well and has been talking to a good friend of his, Chubby Checker. He is still trying to get some singing engagements, and there are several of us that keep asking TJ Lubinski to find room for him at an upcoming show. We will see.
I have another first pressing to try and add to my website. The Monotones first recorded Book Of Love of the Mascot label. Then it was issued on Argo, where it sold a billion copies. I am really hoping to get those updates done on Monday. It will be cause for celebration and a blog update!
If you have never been to Jim Koenig's website, you really should. He features different labels every month, and has some fun with them. I always hate to say "This month is especially good", but it is. He has not had a bad month when it comes to record labels. Jim has a lot of records to pull from, and an abundance of knowledge to tie information together.
