Voxpoppers,Fran-Cettes, KVMR/Big John Little
Things have been a little slow over here. The mailman has actually been happy since there have not been so many boxes of records to deliver. Still, I have found a few assorted discs that I couldn't live without.
The Voxpoppers. Everyone has probably heard "Wishing For Your Love". A very nice late 50's ballad indeed. Recently, I acquired the Voxpoppers EP on Mercury and the release on the Versailles label. A nice group that had a short 15 minutes of fame.
Also interesting, is the group called the Fran-Cettes. I have just the one 45 on the Besche lable, though the group recorded several records in their short career. Frances Gray is listed as one of the members, and has writing credits on both sides of this release, with "Cradle Love" being the plug side. An unusual label name to be sure, it came from the combination of names of the producers listed on the record, Scherman and Besman. I do believe it is the same group that backed the Perez Brothers on Offie's and the Wolfie labels.

We had a membership drive last night on KVMR-FM, but next Saturday, back to the usual. I should have the Big John Little interview on the agenda, providing I can get a few of his newer songs to play. What a great talent he is, still. He has come a long way from Rockin Crickets. The following week, I plan to make a few changes to the show, including a new opening theme. It should be fun, and could take a few weeks to get in a slightly different groove.

Carl Dobkins Jr.,Don Durant, Russell Bice
Brand new page alert! I have uploaded Carl Dobkins Jr. to my website and have several of his records you can see and hear. There is also an interview you can listen to at your leisure. He seems like a great guy and was really enjoyable to speak with. He had a great career and a lot of records that should have charted that didn't. He also has a new CD out which is shown on my page, and can be ordered HERE!
I mentioned some air checks at Rockit Radio in a previous blog. I have had the opportunity to listen to several of them, and create playlists/running orders of events, so that Rockit Radio can add them to their store. Some of the Mad Daddy air checks have been tough, and I have even resorted to buying a few records to confirm what I heard. Yes I know. It's a sickness. One of those records is a lesser known tune by a guy you may have heard of. Mad Daddy actually spun a song called "Seal Rock". It was complete with seal barking sound effects. The artist was Don Durant, who is known for his short lived series called "Johnny Ringo". He made a few records, and my copy is on Fabor, though it was also released on Challenge.
Without a doubt, I have some of the strangest tangents when it comes to record collecting. Occasionally I can't even attempt to explain why I bought something, other than it seemed like something I needed. Thus the addition of two 78's on the Vinatone label. One is blue wax, the other is clear. The records are basically organ music that was played in skating rinks. In this case, they are by a well known organist by the name of Russell Bice, and as I research it, he was based in Detroit. He is also featured in a book called "Skate Crazy". I just had to have them.
Returning from my last adventure from Nova Scotia, you can see some of the pictures that were taken at http://www.sandyspictures.com/travelfriendscanada01.htm
